Movie Tonight

...Not a bad episode, but two things bug me; It still bugs me that Hawkeye calls out, "KLINGER!" a second "before" the movie being watched actually conks out again. And, that each main character, and Hawkeye and BJ simultaneously, could spontaneously come up with rhyming portions of lyrics to the song they sang in the mess tent stretches disbelief. QUESTION; What does Hawkeye keep grumbling with a grin on his face as Margaret is singing? For decades, I've assumed he's just playing the part of a dirty old man as Margaret sings.

Very good point about Hawkeye & B.J. simultaneously singing the same lines. I'd never given that much thought before. Is it possible that they came up with it on the fly, and perhaps discussed it among themselves before it was their turn to sing? I'm not sure what it was that Hawkeye was grumbling, but I think your theory is spot on.

Sorry about pulling up an old post, but I'm watching this episode right now.
Larry Linville does such a great job of being so socially inept. I'm referring to two little snippets. The first is his own verse that NO ONE wants to hear of "Gee, Mom, I Want to go Home" (or whatever it's called). The second is the shootout at the end; he acts like he's choking to death - I'm not sure how a gunshot can do that.

Although it's tough to feel sorry for a major who has a $35,000 house and two cars, he just doesn't get how to act.

Funny thing, Finest, I was just watching this episode over dinner!

The choking thing strikes me every time, and I always wonder if that was Larry being Frank (inept, as you say), or Larry being Larry and trying to come up with something different than everyone else. I want to agree with you, but I'm afraid I've seen this episode too many times to have a clear opinion, haha.

Happy Halloween!

"Movie Tonight" is generally my pick for my favourite episode. Love the banter and the character-driven humour.

I've never actually noticed Hawkeye yelling out to Klinger too early, though. I'll have to look out for that mistake next time I'm watching it.

In regards to the lyrics for "Gee, Mom, I Want to Go Home", or at least the 4077th's variant of the traditional song, I can offer up a few plausible explanations. It's possibly not the first time they've had a singalong and busted out that particular number, so they've probably come up with their own verses before. Other than that, some people can make up songs on the spot if they have a tune to work with, especially since the verses are short and follow a distinct pattern in their humour. The longer you have to wait for your turn, the more time you have to come up with something.

Probably still a stretch that so many people at the 4077th are that good at improv, but hey, they tend to come up with a lot of witty lines at the best of times anyway. ;)

Frank's verse is hilariously awkward, too. Way too late, way too hostile and mean-spirited, and he ends up looking like a fool because of it. As for the choking, it works because it's over the top and misguided. Frank doesn't really know how to have fun or joke around like a well-adjusted person, after all!
