Margaret and Charles

I have noticed recently how much interaction Charles and Margaret had after her marriage started to go south with Donald. Were the writers thinking about building up something between Charles and Margaret and then just decided not to take it to a level beyond friendship?

I am reasonably sure that the producers gave thought to going that route. However, they decided to drop the idea during Season 6.

Yeah they did.... but

They figured that being that Charles' family would never approve. Also after Frank, Donald, and then Scully, they figured that Charles would be just too much. Also Margaret had developed so much from those relationships, that any physical relationship with Charles would hurt that.

"He touched his nose!"

I love that interaction between Margaret and Charles.
And Charles talking with Sydney, that his body must be of great interest to Margaret - time for a reality check, Charles!

Well, Charles WAS replacing Frank as a character, so I think the writers figured it would make sense to try and make him Margaret's new love interest, but I think Gene Reynolds put a stop to that, despite no longer being on the show: he had Margaret get married for a reason, so showing her as still being promiscuous defeated the purpose of her character development.

I NEVER got this idea at all! I think this would be far reaching! I did notice at first, Charles was seen and some of his lines were "Frank like" but it was soon dropped. Charles and Margret were great professional friends and were both too headstrong to be more than that, they would cancel each other out. Both would want to be the leader and would start too many fights, same reason Margret and Hawkeye didn't work out. Friends yes, lovers no.

Early on they seemed to be hinting that Margaret at least was a little interested in or slightly infatuated with him, because of his class and skills as a surgeon. There were moments of tension between them, but it was ultimately dropped.

I think that's for the best. It allowed for more character development and a wider variety of stories, and there was no need to re-hash what they'd done with Frank. It would've been derivative, and less fitting given Charles' character, as well as Margaret's characterisation as the series progressed.

You are right Margaret definitely seemed to like him somewhat. I recall in one of the first episodes with Charles Margaret complains she has something in her eye and when Charles offers to help her remove it she pulls in very close to him so they are barely 2 inches apart face to face.
