Kinda necessary to help a wounded soldier, isn't it?

This scene seems so weird. I wonder if it was based on the research done or if it was a clumsy way to play the Santa/Christmas angle. Without much equipment how much more could a doctor help vs a medic? Why a MASH doctor instead of one from the battalion aide station? If you're pinned down, why would you send a helicopter and two officers (the pilot and the doctor) into this situation? If you're going to wear a Santa suit, why not just wear a bullseye? It would make just a good a target. How'd Hawkeye get out? Just a weird scene I never understood.
