Chapter 19: Radar vs. the Ohio National Guard

After the arrest of CHARLES MANSON in connection with the TATE-LaBIANCA murders RADAR resumed his duties as sheriff of ITASCA COUNTY. By JAN. 1970 We learned of the U.S. Military forces in VIETNAM moving the battle into CAMBODIA. This lead to large amounts of college students protesting the war even more than before!? RADAR was joining the multi day protest rally at KENT STATE to show that he was totally in favor of peace. As RADAR, FLAGG, & KLINGER enjoyed this peaceful protest as students of the college yelled phrases such as "HELL NO! WE WON'T GO!" & "BRING OUR GI'S HOME!", the guys just started to enjoy a simple picnic lunch during the festivities. But then an ill wind started to blow. Suddenly GENERAL MAY and the National Guard Unit under his command showed up to bring an end to protest going on. This meant trouble!

So RADAR, FLAGG, & KLINGER quickly grabbed their sidearms from the picnic basket & concealed them under their clothes. Then after a certain amount of minutes GENERAL MAY yelled out loud, "Open Fire!!!" Then the Guardsmen shot into the crowd! 4 students died instantly! 9 others were only wounded! A 14yr. old runaway girl from FLORIDA knelt beside the body of one of the dead male students and the photograph of her kneeling beside his corpse made the front page of most metropolitan newspapers the following day. Then taking action to stop the shooting RADAR grabbed for his electronic bullhorn & yelled into it, "GENERAL MAY!!! This is SHERIFF RADAR O'REILLY of ITASCA COUNTY, MINNESOTA! I'M placing you, and your entire unit under citizens arrest for 4 counts of 1ST degree murder, and 9 counts of attempted murder!!!!!!!! Now surrender to me in the name of the law, or else My chief deputy SAM FLAGG & My CHIEF-OF-DETECTIVES MAXWELL Q. KLINGER will be forced shoot you and as many of your troopers as we possibly can!? Now how do you want it?" So without hesitation GENERAL MAY and all troopers under his command were placed under citizens arrest!?

OHIO STATE POLICE at the scene were shocked to see a brother officer such as RADAR arresting a General of the National Guard and all of his troops! In order to avoid a scandal of any kind PRESIDENT RICHARD M. NIXON ordered J.EDGAR HOOVER to hush up the story of GENERAL MAY being placed under citizens arrest, while the shooting of the 4 co-eds got loads of publicity. All that the voters of ITASCA COUNTY had to say to the press was "We'll take SHERIFF O'REILLY any day as a duly, constituted, & elected official of our county." In the offices of JUDGE JUDAS STEDMAN of neighboring CASS COUNTY he decided to hold a special election so that CASS COUNTY should have new sheriff elected to public office in order to have someone whom would someday gundown RADAR in cold blood, or vice versa!?

So with that, JUDGE STEDMAN campaigned hard, and by a landslide FRANK BURNS (now discharged from the U.S. medical profession for keeps) won the election as the new sheriff of CASS COUNTY. This troubled GRAND RAPIDS newspaper editor LUTHER HEGGS as well as BRITT REED, the owner-publisher of THE DAILY SENTINEL in DULUTH. REED'S dual identity of the GREEN HORNET was only known to his Secretary LENORE "CASEY" CASE, & DULUTH D.A. (DISTRICT ATTORNEY) FRANK SCANLON. Now one of RADAR'S worst fears had come true. The great county line war between ITASCA COUNTY and CASS COUNTY had begun and JUDGE STEDMAN had made the 1st move by helping FRANK BURNS get elected to the office of sheriff, but inside his own guts RADAR had a feeling that one day he would have to shoot FRANK BURNS dead in the name of justice!!
